In the wider world, hydrogen peroxide is probably best known as a household antiseptic and disinfectant, hair bleaching agent, or for use in oral care. However, in the world of cleanrooms when carefully converted into a fine gas and released into a sealed cleanroom, it becomes a powerful tool for eliminating bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores.
The gas spreads evenly through the space, reaching surfaces that are difficult — or impossible — to clean by hand. Once the process is complete, it naturally breaks down into oxygen and water vapour, leaving no chemical residue behind.
In short: it disinfects deeply, thoroughly, consistently and then disappears.
While the technology within the equipment is sophisticated, the overall process is surprisingly simple and the entire cycle can often be completed in a matter of hours:
Preparation
The cleanroom is sealed and environmental conditions such as temperature and humidity are checked.
Distribution
Hydrogen peroxide is vapour is released into the room, filling the space evenly.
Contact time
The gas remains in place long enough to kill microorganisms on walls, ceilings, floors, and equipment.
Removal
The gas is broken down and safely removed, returning the room to normal operating conditions.
Heat-Based Sterilisation
High-temperature methods work well for equipment but are impractical for entire cleanrooms and sensitive electronics.
Compared to these methods, hydrogen peroxide gas provides a balance of safety, speed, and thoroughness that is hard to match.
UV disinfection systems are now also becoming available to address these same problems but in a different way. Indeed, we are the exclusive distributor for UVD Robots, for more information, click here. While UV disinfection light might not get to every area of a cleanroom like hydrogen peroxide can, in most cases it can cover about 90% of a cleanroom is a completely autonomous, consistent way which drastically reduces human interaction even further without the need to switch off airflows or have any chemical risks at all. There is no one solution for every customer and this is why we offer multiple solutions to address the same age-old problem of contamination control.
